What Are Massachusetts Childcare Licensing Requirements?

By Dan Sweeney

Massachusetts childcare licensing is designed to help protect children and support quality standards in early education and care settings.

The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, often called EEC, licenses Family Child Care and Group & School Age Child Care programs in the state.

Licensing requirements cover many areas of program operation, including health, safety, supervision, staffing, nutrition, transportation, and physical space. Massachusetts also publishes EEC laws, regulations, and policies that apply to early care programs.

For parents, licensing is an important starting point. It does not replace a tour or personal evaluation, but it helps confirm that a program is operating under state oversight.

When touring a childcare center, parents can ask whether the program is licensed, how staff are trained, how children are supervised, what safety procedures are in place, and how the center communicates with families.

A licensed program should be able to answer these questions clearly and help parents feel comfortable with the care environment.
